The Advanced Simulation and Experimental testing (ASSET) lab at UBC’s School of Engineering in the Okanagan is actively seeking a highly motivated full-time postdoctoral fellow (PDF) with a strong background in structural & earthquake engineering. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a range of research areas related to reinforced concrete buildings and innovative systems. 

The ASSET lab is a new lab within the School of Engineering, and we are growing quickly! Our group aims to develop innovative technology, design methods, and construction techniques that will facilitate the construction of greener structures that are resilient to natural disasters. Specifically, we are experts in using large-scale experimental testing and advanced numerical simulations to understand the behavior of structures in earthquakes. Job description

The UBC-Okanagan’s School of Engineering – Structural Engineering postdoctoral fellow. 

Term: Full-time 6-12 months, with the possibility of extension.
Starting Date: Jan 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Stipend: $40,000 – $45,000 CAD/year + conference travel

Research priority

The ASSET lab has recently created several industry partnerships within the construction industry. The successful candidate will work with these partners to develop new seismic design guidelines for reinforced concrete structures and develop innovative structural systems. This project will involve working closely with industry professionals, and therefore, the successful candidate should demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills. 

Research programs at the ASSET group involve advanced numerical simulation of structural systems and large-scale experimental testing. Since many of our research partnerships relate to the seismic response of reinforced concrete buildings, candidates must have a strong understanding of the nonlinear behavior of concrete structures and the ability to develop accurate and robust nonlinear numerical models.

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently conduct creative research, a strong commitment to teamwork, and the ability to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts. In addition, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in structural engineering, civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited university within the last five years or are in near completion with a confirmed defense date.

The ASSET lab champions many initiatives to support underrepresented groups in engineering, such as women and Indigenous people. Therefore, ideal candidates will have an interest in participating and leading related initiatives.

Organizational structure

Under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Tobber (School of Engineering – Civil Engineering), the successful candidate will also work closely with graduate students and industry partners. 

Responsibilities 

• Assist in supervision and mentoring of graduate students.
• Liaise with industry partners.
• Assist with proposal writing, research report writing, and journal and conference paper preparation.
